This auditorium, located in the “Parco del Castello”, was created from an idea of Architect Renzo Piano and the orchestra leader Claudio Abbado. The intent was to provide the city of L’Aquila with a temporary aggregation pole of culture and music, while waiting for the restoration of the buildings damaged by the earthquake of the 2009.
The building is composed by three wooden cubes that interact with the Spanish Fortress. The main block hosts the concert hall with a capacity an audience of 238 and 40 musicians; in the other two buildings are located public services and artists services.
SIO carried out the value engineering, final structural design and shop drawings of the main building, including seismic dampers and the timber structures (glulam and X-Lam).
In the detail, the project design by SIO completely modified the original proposal. The new proposal was based on a construction system with free-standing timber elements that permitted assembly phases inside the building. In this way was reduced the execution times of the entire complex to 6 months.
The building has been certified ARCA with SILVER LEVEL.
