The pair of twin hangars formed by two symmetrical modules, with an overall rectangular plant equal to 142 x 37 metres and a total height of about 18 metres, is situated inside the military airport of Roma-Viterbo and, at present, houses 17 military multifunction helicopters NH-90.
The roof is a tridimensional steel structure, formed by longitudinal grid beams with a double sloping roof of 70 metres, supported by hollow circular section columns with diameter of 660 mm and thickness of 7 mm. The first two trusses are equipped with an appendage which extends to the ground and allows all the sections of the access gates to the open.
SIO was involved in the final structural design with the optimization of the original project (value engineering activity), through the redesigning of the original reinforced concrete columns with hollow steel section, the rigid connection of these with the grid beams of the roof (allowing transition to a hyperstatic frame structural scheme) with consequent deleted of dampers on the top of the vertical elements.
