The parisian architect Aymeric Zublena designed the New Hospital in Bergamo (now called Pope John XXIII) as a complex of 7 towers in aluminium and glass, each with 5 storeys, joined together by the big sloping roof of the central core of 3 storeys which hosts the services.
This solution of “different bodies” gives the whole structures a feeling of openness towards the surrounding park and ensures that most of the rooms have a view of the hills of Città Alta (the Medieval part of Bergamo), at the same time guaranteeing a correct exposure to the sun.
The distributive ring, so called “Hospital Street”, is instead formed by large glass galleries which lead to the principale entrance. It hosts 36 operating rooms, 226 outpatient clinics and a heliport.
The entire building can accommodate up to 1,200 patients.
SIO carried out the detailed design and shop drawings of all steel structural elements which characterize these buildings. In detail, the façades of the 7 towers and the details of the nodes of the Hospital street were designed not only from the structural point of view, but also a strong attention was paid to the architectural aspects and composition.
