The hangar, inside the Coast Guards Base of Sarzana-Luni, is characterized by a rectangular plant of 61.5 x 30 metres, with a total height of 12.5 metres, and it is situated next to the existing station in order to house 9 Augusta AB 412 helicopters, used in Civil Protection operations.
The roof is a tridimensional steel structure formed by 9 longitudinal truss with double sloping and span of 61.5 metres, connected together by secondary transversal beams and supported by two principal transversal beams of 30 metres. Said steel beams are able to transmit the weight of the roof to four columns in r.c. (with a section of 150 x 150 centimetres) by means of fixed and sliding dampers to absorb the most violent possible seismicity.
As well as the final design with the relative optimization of the original structural design solutions and the drafting of the shop drawings, SIO undertook the design of the load test (carried out with 4 inflatable water tanks each of 10,000 litres) with the intention of simulating, not only the load of the snow, but also the installation of a bridge crane for the maintenance of the aviation vehicles.
