Located in a growing residential area, without any architectural identity, the new Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak mosque designed by Spatium has become the recognisable element.
The building has a square plan, with the main prayer hall on the ground floor and an area reserved for women situated in the women’s gallery.
The elements which characterizes the building is the spiral dome which covers the entire volume, becoming with its upwards tension a symbolic expression of the power of prayers.
The theme of the spiral, which is a classic element of islamic architecture representing the ascension to heaven, is review in a contemporary key also in the minaret, inspired by the structure of Samarra.
Two covered paths connect the main area to the ablution rooms, defining the zone dedicated to the open air prayers; a closed glazed colonnade guarantees the maximum transparency between this space and the internal area, underlining the lightness and the dynamism of the whole building.
The structural concept design carried out by SIO provided for the realization of a square box with reinforced concrete walls and the entire roofing steel structure with an equivalent shell grid structure.
